Dalam mempelajari tenses, Present Continuous Tense merupakan bagian materi yang tak boleh kamu lewatkan. Berbeda dari Simple Present Tense, tenses yang berikut ini memiliki struktur kalimat lebih kompleks. Agar lebih jelas, simak pembahasan berikut sampai tuntas.

Apa itu Present Continuous Tense?

Present Continuous Tense atau Present Progressive Tense merupakan salah satu tenses yang digunakan untuk menyatakan sesuatu yang belum terselesaikan alias unfinished / incomplete. 

Jadi, biasanya tenses ini digunakan untuk menyatakan sesuatu yang masih berlangsung saat ini. Misalnya, you are studying English grammar. Kamu memang lagi belajar grammar, bukan?

Berikut adalah beberapa penggunaan Present Continuous Tense:

• Untuk menyatakan suatu aksi, pekerjaan, atau aktivitas yang sedang berlangsung saat ini. 

Contoh: She is using the internet. You are studying English grammar. He is talking with his boss.

• Untuk menyatakan tren maupun suatu aksi yang sedang berlangsung dalam sebuah periode waktu – hingga saat ini.

Contoh: More and more people are becoming vegetarian (tren). Is she still working for company ABC? (suatu aksi yang berlangsung hingga sekarang)

• Untuk menyatakan suatu aksi atau peristiwa (event) di masa depan yang sudah direncanakan atau dipersiapkan.  

Contoh: I am going on holiday tomorrow. She is meeting my friend tonight. Is your grandma visiting you next winter?

• Untuk menyatakan peristiwa yang bersifat sementara (temporary) maupun sebuah situasi. 

Contoh: She usually plays bass guitar, but she is playing the drums tonight. The weather forecast was good, but it is raining at the moment. 

• Untuk menyatakan aksi berulang (repeated actions) apabila terdapat kata always, constantly, atau forever. 

Contoh: Nia and Dina are always arguing. My friend is constantly complaining about her mother-in-law.

Rumus Present Continuous Tense

S adalah subject yang dapat berupa I, you, we, they, he, she dan it. Adapun, to be yang digunakan dalam present continous tense merupakan to be berbentuk present, yakni am, is atau are. 

I = am (singkatan / contractions: I’m)

You, They, We = Are (singkatan / contractions: you’re, they’re, we’re)

He, She, It = Is (singkatan / contractions: he’s, she’s, it’s)

Setelah to be, kemudian disusul present participle. Present participle adalah kata kerja dasar (base verb) yang mendapat imbuhan -ing. Contohnya: working (base: work, mendapat imbuhan -ing menjadi working).

Tidak semua kata kerja digunakan dalam present continuous. Ada beberapa kata kerja yang tidak biasa dipakai dalam tenses ini, contohnya: 

to feel, to smell, to hear, to taste, to assume, to consider, to doubt, to forget, to mean, to notice dan banyak lagi lainnya. Kamu bisa melihat daftarnya di laman EF Edu. 

Biasanya, verb seperti di atas digunakan dalam simple present, bukan present continuous. Hal ini karena sifatnya cenderung menyatakan keadaan (states), bukan aksi, tindakan atau proses.

Untuk perception verbs (see, hear, taste, feel, smell) sebenarnya lazim saja digunakan dalam present continuous. Hanya, makna kalimatnya kerap berubah. Sebagai contoh:

• Simple present: I can see Baki in the garden. (maknanya: aku melihat Baki di taman)
• Present continuous : I am seeing Baki later. (maknanya: aku berencana ketemuan sama Baki)

Cukup berbeda bukan? 

Contoh lainnya:

• Simple present: This coat feels soft and warm. (maknanya lebih kepada indera peraba: jaket ini terasa lembut dan hangat)
• Present continuous: Baki is feeling much better now. (maknanya lebih kepada perkembangan kesehatan: Baki merasa jauh membaik / sehat sekarang)
