Simple Past Tense merupakan salah satu dari 16 tenses Bahasa Inggris yang perlu dipelajari. Tenses ini memiliki ciri khas pada penggunaan kata kerja bentuk lampau atau disebut pula verb 2. Agar lebih memahami tenses ini, mari perhatikan pembahasan mengenai,rumus dan latihan soal Simple Past Tense berikut ini. 

Apa itu Simple Past Tense?

Simple Past Tense atau sering disebut the preterite, merupakan tenses yang digunakan untuk menyatakan sesuatu yang terjadi dan selesai di masa lalu. Masa lalu disini memiliki rentang yang luas, mulai dari sedetik lalu hingga pada jaman dahulu kala. Semuanya masuk ke dalam kategori masa lalu. 

Biasanya, tenses ini dilengkapi dengan adverbs of time yang menunjukkan waktu lampau, seperti yesterday, a minute ago, last week, ago, just now, when I was a child, a long time ago, the other day, ages ago, dan semacamnya. 

Selain itu, terkadang Simple Past Tense juga menggunakan frequency seperti often, always, sometimes, dan sebagainya. 

Berikut adalah beberapa contoh Simple Past Tense:

• We sometimes walked home at lunchtime. 

• She often brought my lunch to school.

• I saw a good film last week. 

• She finished her homework at 8 p,m.

• Yesterday, we arrived in Jakarta.

Mengutip British Council, Simple Past Tense bisa digunakan untuk:

• Membicarakan sesuatu yang terjadi sekali di masa lalu.

Contoh: I met my husband a long time ago. (membicarakan pertemuan pertama dengan suaminya. Pertemuan pertama terjadi satu kali)

• Membicarakan sesuatu yang terjadi beberapa kali di masa lalu.

Contoh: When I was a child, I used to walk a mile to school every day. 

• Membicarakan sesuatu yang benar terjadi / pernah terjadi di masa lalu. 

Contoh: I lived abroad for 5 years. (dulu, ia memang tinggal di luar negeri selama 5 tahun, sekarang ia sudah tidak tinggal disana lagi)

Saat berbicara sesuatu yang terjadi di masa lalu, terkadang pembicara menggunakan kata used to. Contohnya seperti ini: 

When I was young, I used to dance with my father in the evening. 

Apa ya maksudnya? Ketika menggunakan used to, berarti pembicara menyatakan kebiasaan di masa lalu yang kini tidak terjadi lagi. Dalam contoh di atas, maksudnya berdansa dengan sang ayah adalah suatu kebiasaan di masa lalu yang kini tidak terjadi lagi. 

Rumus Simple Past Tense

Simple Past Tense positif terdiri dari subject + verb 2 atau subject + to be lampau. Contohnya seperti ini:

• I fell in love with you at the time. (pola: s + verb 2)

• She hit me, but I was okay. (pola s + to be lampau) 

To be dalam bentuk lampau terdiri dari was dan were. Jika subjectnya adalah I, she, he, atau it, maka to be lampau yang digunakan adalah was. Sementara jika subjectnya adalah you, we, they, maka to be lampau yang digunakan adalah were. Agar lebih jelas, perhatikan ini:

I, she, he, it => was (+) / wasn’t (-)

You, we, they => were (+) / weren’t (-)

Kata wasn’t merupakan singkatan dari was not. Begitupula, weren’t berasal dari were not. Keduanya digunakan untuk menyusun Simple Past Tense negatif. Contohnya: 

• She wasn’t a student. (kalimat negatif)

• He wasn’t happy. (kalimat negatif)

• They weren’t interested in the tour. (kalimat negatif)

• She was a student. (kalimat positif)

• He was happy. (kalimat positif)

• They were interested in the tour. (kalimat positif)

Adapun untuk menyusun kalimat tanya, aturannya juga tidak sulit. Jika kalimat mengandung verb, maka kamu perlu menempatkan kata did atau didn’t di awal kalimat. Sementara jika tidak, maka kamu bisa menempatkan to be lampau di awal kalimat. Contohnya:

• Did you go to the cinema last night? (pola: did + subject?)

• Was she excited? (pola: to be lampau + subject?)

• Didn’t you call me a few minutes ago? (Tidakkah kamu memanggilku beberapa menit lalu?)

Contoh Simple Past Tense

Berikut adalah beberapa contoh kalimat Simple Past Tense:

• I finished university in 2023 and I started a job in a digital marketing agency. 
• She phoned me yesterday. 
• Baki went to Tokyo three times last year. 
• Medina Warda Aulia came 1st at the World Junior Championship (Girls) in 2012, but placed 4th on a tiebreak behind Qi Guo. 
• Last summer, I had a nasty accident. 
• I shouted to my friend for help.
