Simple Future Tense merupakan salah satu dari 16 tenses bahasa Inggris yang digunakan untuk membicarakan sesuatu di masa depan. Contohnya kalimatnya seperti berikut ini:

I will go to Yogyakarta tomorrow (aku akan pergi ke Yogyakarta besok). 

I will call you again later. (aku akan meneleponmu lagi nanti)

I am going to bring you lunch. (aku (berencana) akan membawakanmu makan siang)

Semua kalimat di atas menunjukkan pembicara sedang membahas sesuatu yang belum terjadi saat ini, tetapi kemungkinan besar akan terjadi nanti, entah esok hari atau suatu saat di masa mendatang. Nah, pada pembicaraan seperti inilah kamu bisa menggunakan Simple Future Tense.

Apa Itu Simple Future Tense?

Simple Future Tense adalah tenses yang digunakan untuk menyatakan fakta atau kejelasan di masa depan. Secara umum, Simple Future Tense dipakai untuk:

• Memprediksi sesuatu yang mungkin terjadi nanti / di masa depan.

Contohnya: It will rain tomorrow.

• Bila terdapat subject I atau We, maka biasanya untuk menyatakan keputusan spontanitas. 

Contohnya: We will pay for the tickets in cash.

• Untuk menyampaikan kesediaan melakukan sesuatu (will). Bisa juga untuk menyampaikan ketidaksediaan melakukan sesuatu (will not / won’t).

Contohnya: 

I will do the washing-up. 

The baby will eat her soup.i

She won’t carry your bag for you.

We won’t leave until we’ve seen your boss. 

• Dalam bentuk pertanyaan (kalimat tanya) menggunakan kata shall dan subject I, simple future tense dapat berfungsi sebagai penawaran maupun meminta saran / instruksi.  

Contohnya: 

Shall I raise the price? (penawaran)

What shall I tell Baki about this money? (meminta saran/instruksi)+

• Jika pertanyaan di atas menggunakan shall dan subject we, maka dapat menjadi saran (suggestion).

Contohnya: Shall we go to the restaurant tonight?

• Jika subject adalah you, maka dapat diartikan sebagai perintah. Jika berbentuk pertanyaan, maka dapat berarti mengundang / mengajak / memberi undangan. 

Contohnya: 

You will do exactly as I say. (perintah)

Will you come to my birthday party tonight? (mengundang)

Will you marry me? (mengajak)

Will you come with me? (mengajak)

Bagi yang belum tahu, terkadang pembicara menggunakan be going to saat membicarakan sesuatu di masa depan. Contohnya: She is going to drive to work today. Lantas, apa bedanya be going to dengan will? 

Sederhananya, be going to digunakan untuk membicarakan sesuatu yang sudah direncanakan. Sementara, will lebih bersifat spontanitas.

Rumus Simple Future Tense

Dalam mempelajari Simple Future Tense, sebaiknya kamu mengenal beberapa singkatan (contractions) seperti: 

• I’ll = I will
• We’ll = We will
• You’ll = You will
• He’ll = He will
• She’ll = She will
• They’ll = They will
• Won’t = will not 
• It’ll = It will (singkatan it’ll kurang umum, tetapi sering dijumpai pada lirik lagu)
