Rumus & Soal Past Continuous Tense 

Secara sederhana, Past Continuous Tense adalah tenses yang menyatakan sesuatu atau peristiwa di masa lalu. Loh, berarti sama saja dong dengan Simple Past Tense? Tidak demikian. Kedua tenses ini memiliki fungsi yang sedikit berbeda. Agar lebih jelas, simak penjelasan mengenai Past Continuous Tense berikut ini.

Definisi Past Continuous Tense

Past Continuous Tense merupakan tenses yang digunakan untuk membicarakan sesuatu / kejadian yang sedang berlangsung di masa lalu. Biasanya kejadian tersebut belum selesai alias sedang berlangsung di suatu waktu tertentu pada masa lalu, tetapi kemudian diinterupsi (diganggu) peristiwa yang lain. Contohnya:

• She was having a sweet dream when the alarm rang.

Kalimat yang diberi garis bawah adalah past continuous tense. Perhatikan, dalam kalimat tersebut dijelaskan bahwa seseorang sedang bermimpi indah, namun kemudian alarm berbunyi sehingga ia terbangun dari mimpi indahnya. 

Apabila disandingkan dengan peristiwa yang lebih penting, maka past continuous tense sering berfungsi sebagai latar. Biasanya, peristiwa yang ingin di-highlight ditulis dalam simple past tense. Contohnya: 

• I was waiting for the cab when I met Baki. 

Dalam hal ini, peristiwa yang lebih penting adalah pertemuan si pembicara dengan Baki. Sementara, kalimat past continuous tense yang berbunyi I was waiting for the cab hanya berperan sebagai latar belakangnya saja (background). 

Sementara, jika terdapat kata wonder dalam kalimat past continuous, maka hal ini dapat menunjukkan permintaan atau pertanyaan yang sopan. Contohnya:

• I was wondering if you could send me the price list 

• I was wondering if you could show me the monthly organic traffic of this article from Google Analytics

• I was wondering if you could help me on my project 

• I was wondering if you want to go for dinner

• I was wondering whether you fancied coming along for the ride.   

Past Continuous Tense dapat pula menyatakan perubahan pikiran / rencana seperti berikut ini.

• I was going to spend the day at home but I’ve decided to go to work instead.

Kalimat yang terdiri dari past continuous tense dan present perfect tense di atas menunjukkan perubahan rencana, dari yang semula ingin menghabiskan waktu di rumah, namun malah pergi bekerja.

Rumus Past Continuous Tense (Kalimat Positif, Negatif dan Tanya)

Jika subject berupa I, She, He, It

S + to be lampau (was) + verb-ing (kalimat positif)

S + to be lampau (was) + not + verb-ing (kalimat negatif)

To be lampau (was) + s + verb-ing? (kalimat tanya)

Jika subject berupa You, They, We

S + to be lampau (were) + verb-ing (kalimat positif)

S + to be lampau (were) + not + verb-ing (kalimat negatif)

To be lampau (were) + s + verb-ing? (kalimat tanya)

 

Perlu diketahui, tidak semua kata kerja (verb) dapat digunakan dalam past continuous tense. Untuk kata kerja (verb) yang tidak biasa digunakan, kamu bisa menggunakannya dalam simple past tense.

Ciri-Ciri Past Continuous Tense

Past Continuous Tense biasanya menggunakan to be lampau (was, were). Selain itu, verb yang digunakan bukanlah base verb (kata kerja dasar), melainkan verb yang diberi akhiran -ing. Contoh: eating, playing, walking, dan semacamnya.

Tak hanya itu, past continuous tense juga biasanya dilengkapi dengan adverb of time lampau, seperti last week, yesterday, three days ago, dan sebagainya.
